The first day of summer

Saturday was the first official day of summer, and it didn't disappoint. It started bright and early at 5:15 a.m., when Bailey woke me up to go on a morning walk.  After walking for about 30 minutes, I decided I needed to go back to sleep, and slept on the couch until about 8 or so.

Once I officially woke up for the day, I had an egg bagel for breakfast - which is really the best type of bagel around - and then did a quick workout with my sister.  A little later in the morning, we headed up north for the MS Muck Fest (more on that later in the week).   We spent several hours outside hanging at the Muck Festival, running the course and getting muddy, and then enjoying our free beer and some music afterward.

Once we got home in the early evening, we showered up (which took longer than usual - I didn't do a great job rinsing off afterward, apparently) and ate a quick dinner. Then my dad, sister, her boyfriend, and I headed over to a local beach on the bay to celebrate the first day of summer with a bonfire and some marshmallows.  It was the same beach that I helped clean up a few weeks back.

It was a gorgeous night.  Warm, but not too hot and muggy.  And the sunset was great.

We got there a bit early for the bonfire (which was put on by the local park system), so we took a walk out onto the pier to check out the sunset and the views of Manhattan and the Jersey coastline

Then, we took a walk up the beach toward a jetty and inlet as the sun set further. After killing about 30 minutes, we headed back to the bonfire.

There were marshmallows and chocolate chip cookies (sadly, no makings for s'mores, but I made a poor man's s'more with two cookies and a 'mallow).  There was also a woman with a guitar signing, and some stories from the Native Americans from the region.   We were the only family at the bonfire that didn't have small children, but it didn't matter.  The kids were all cute and I showed them how to stake their 'mallow stick in the stand so you didn't have to burn your knuckles holding it over the fire.

All in all, it was a really fun (although loooooong) start to the summer.  I definitely slept well that night!
