The run was open to people of all ages, and I saw everyone from infants (in strollers, accompanying older siblings) to eight year olds, to parents and grandparents (many of whom were just as into it as their kids, if not moreso). The course was a bit over a mile and included a number of "obstacles" that each kid had to tackle - like weaving through objects, jumping over (really low to the ground) things, fishing for (plastic) bugs, and crawling through tunnels.
My sister and I were stationed at the Hulk Smash, where the kids had to carry a small exercise ball over their heads for a few meters and then slam it into a net on the ground.
The kids were so cute. Some couldn't hold the ball over their head so they rolls or kicked or convinced their parents to carry the ball to the net for them. Then they'd pick it up and slam it down. They were all so proud of themselves! One kid even said "I can't believe I did that!"
It was so much fun to watch the kids enjoy themselves. And they didn't even realize that they were exercising or doing something good for them. They just knew that they were wearing capes and pretending to be superheroes and just having fun. (I also saw several kids with socks with capes on them, which are awesome.)
I think we lose that a we get older. That sense of just having fun and, hey, if it's good for you then that's a bonus. That's something that I need to work on - doing things that are fun just because they are first and foremost fun and not because they are good for you first and fun second. That's my goal for the summer, especially as I get out and explore on the weekends.
I'll have to keep the superheroes in mind and run when I can, walk when I want to, and have fun the whole time.
